Come Thou Fount | Jeremiah 2

“Prone to wander, Lord, I feel it … prone to leave the God I love.”

Come Thou Fount of Every Blessing is a beautiful song about the goodness of God, but it is also remarkably honest about the tendency of our hearts to wander. Through the story of Robert Robinson and the history of Judah in Jeremiah 2, we are reminded of what happens when we forget what God has shown us, look somewhere else for what only He can give, and recognize that our hearts have wandered.

Jeremiah reminds us that Judah repeatedly forgot the God who had revealed Himself to them. They abandoned the “spring of living water” and dug broken cisterns that could not satisfy. Yet their wandering was not the end of their story.

The same is true for us.

When I forget, I can remember what God has shown me.

When I need what only God can give, I can return to the Fount.

When I recognize my wandering, I can surrender my heart to God.

The Fount has not moved.

“Here’s my heart, O take and seal it.”
