SOS | What a Friend We Have in Jesus | August 23, 2026 | West Side Church of Christ
What do we do when life gets hard? What do we do when life is good? What do we do when we're sick, overwhelmed, or unsure whether our prayers even make a difference?
In the final sermon of our 2026 Songs of Summer series, we turn to the familiar hymn “What a Friend We Have in Jesus” and James 5:13–18. Through the story behind Joseph Scriven’s hymn and the teaching of James, we are reminded that prayer is not simply an emergency response. It is how we bring every part of our lives to God.
When we're hurting, we can pray. When life is good, we can praise. When we're sick, we don't have to walk through it alone. When we wonder whether prayer matters, James reminds us of Elijah and the power of prayer. Ultimately, we can bring everything to God because Jesus is the Friend who bore our sins and griefs at the cross.
“What a privilege to carry everything to God in prayer.”
